has anyone tried upgrading fedora on their server (eg. from FC7 to FC8 or higher)? I see that you can install preupgrade via yum and then run preupgrade-cli to upgrade fedora...anyone have any comments good or bad on the process?

From my experience, Fedora doesn't always do so well with distribution upgrades between major version numbers on a live system. I've seen them go through just fine without a problem, but I've also seen them go horribly wrong and cause quite a bit of downtime. It's really up to how much of a risk you're willing to take, and your expertise, honestly. My recommendation would be to either have a reinstall done and then migrate the data over to the new installation, or simply purchase a new server with an updated version of Fedora and migrate to that at your leisure, and cancel the old one when you're done. I understand that buying a new server to migrate to can be a bit expensive at times, but honestly that's the way that I do major OS upgrades on my own personal systems, as well as corporate systems at work. That leaves you the time to make sure it's done right before you switch to a live system, and is usually only causes minimal downtime, if any.
Now, that being said, I haven't heard anything about the more recent versions of Fedora, it may have improved. I've seen 5-6 and 6-7 attempted though, with varying results. |
